Gardiner boys, girls sweep homestanding White Sulphur

The Gardiner High School boys and girls basketball teams combined to win three of four District 11/12C matchups over the weekend.

The lone defeat — the Lady Bruins’ 47-31 verdict against the Harrison Lady Wildcats — was to the No. 3 squad in the league, which features all-conference standout Taylor Statton.

The Bruin boys were perfect on the weekend,  knocking off visiting Harrison Friday 78-68 in overtime, and homestanding White Sulphur Springs Saturday 58-56.

The Lady Bruins dismantled the Lady Hornets 49-31.

Bruins

White Sulphur Springs had quite a sting through three quarters Saturday.

Sparked by Tyler West’s 10 points, White Sulphur carried a 47-40 lead into the final eight minutes of the league contest.

That lead wasn’t enough.

Bruins’ Jarrett Kremer and Andy Coy were next to unstoppable, sparking Gardiner’s 18-9 fourth-quarter scoring bulge to hand the Bruins the two-point decision.

Kremer finished with a game-high 19 points and Coy added 18.

Gardiner also got eight points from senior all-conference guard Devon Kennedy and six from Connor Wines.

Tyler West sparked the Hornets with 14 points and Willinas added 10.

A night earlier, four different Bruins scored 12 or more points in Gardiner’s 10-point decision over the Wildcats.

Kremer had a game-high 21, Coy chipped in 16, Forest Reinhart had 15, and Kennedy chipped in 12.

Kennedy was on fire in the four-minute overtime.

With the score knotted at 62-all after four quarters, Kennedy scored eight points in the extra period, and Kremer and Reinhart added four each in the 16-6 run.

With the weekend sweep, the Bruins are 8-8 overall, but more importantly, 7-7 in District 11/12C.

The Bruins conclude the regular season against two of 11/12C’s best.

In its home finale, Friday, Gardiner entertains No. 2 Manhattan Christian.

Saturday, the Bruins conclude the regular season at No. 4 Ennis.

Lady Bruins

Early on, White Sulphur played right with the favored Gardiner girls.

After one quarter, the Lady Hornets led 11-10.

But then, Gardiner went to work. The Lady Bruins outscored White Sulphur 22-11 over the next two quarters to secure the 18-point decision.

Kelly Harbach led all scorers in the game with 19 points, Bruin teammate Schuyler Bush added 12, Hannah Dean finished with eight, and Patty Lange netted four.

Sarah Schlepp led White Sulphur with nine and Danica Weitz netted seven.

Friday, Harrison jumped to a 15-6 lead early and never looked back in earning the 16-point win.

Dean led Gardiner with 16 points, Tess Thomas had six and Harbach netted four.

Jaci Nesbit had eight points and Britt Cooper had seven for Harrison.

Gardiner concludes the regular season Friday against visiting Manhattan and Saturday at Ennis.
